Neighborhood

Much has been written , and more will be written on the Mafra National Palace . The first known document is a royal decree ordering the construction of a convent arrábido , " a handout " , as was customary in the houses of this Order . The congregation was known for its poverty campaigner , following the example of St. Francis , but as early as 1714 the King called to him the conduct and control of the work . The 20s was a great period of operation , telling that , on the former shipyard and old town of Mafra " constantly hovered a cloud of dust."

The hitherto quiet town became the center of the kingdom, here converging thousands of workers and artists , responsible for building the most impressive monument erected by a monarch of 4 . Dynasty and one of the few works of national real world impact .

For such a magnanimous achievement D. John V chose the most prestigious architect at your service : Johann Ludwig ( Ludwig ) , artist Roman solid , but in Mafra, included some national respect , freeing up the erudition and complexity of Italian authors . If architecture is something deeply national , the various arts that had joined the project as a point of departure and arrival canons Romans : the statues that support the " Window of the King" , which disperse the porch and who are at inside the church came from the hands of Carlo Monaldi and other young sculptors , the gigantic baroque canvases are by names like Francesco Trevisani and Agostino Masucci or even Sebastian Conca , principal name this cycle throughout Europe .

In its rich trajectory , the Monument of Mafra is much more than these brief references . The chimes , the dome ( after 1730 ) , the magnificent library ( just 3 . ª in importance that of D. João V ordered form ) , the impressive collection of vestments , the Elliptical Hall , the Chapel of the Seven Altars , Garden the siege , the covered the yard ... points are essential to discover and learn . Extinct religious orders and deployed the Republic , all transfigured and houses today, one of the most mythical memories of the Portuguese army , as well as one of the most remarkable National Palaces , establishing itself as a brand identity unmistakable Mafra , but also the own.
