The only interest of this hotel is its proximity to the UN compound. Otherwise it's bad value for money, it's gloomy, food is bad, breakfast is terrible. The rooms were not ready when we arrived. Don't spend more than a couple of nights there or you'll get very depressed!

china garden is how everyone else had described it. safe, for budget travelers. extremely helpful and genuinely friendly staff. all very run down, dingy light, just about clean enough but barely , very slow internet. location is quite far from center of town so unless you are coming to work at embassy or UN, it's very inconvenient to there.

I have stayed at the China Garden both in their appartments and in their hotel. The appartments are a bit better than the rooms but both are very bad value for money. The service is poor and the management is unpleasant. Internet does not work half of the time and when it does, it is extremely slow as you are sharing one line with 30 other rooms and apartments. When you complain, they just tell you "tomorrow" which is just their way to calm you down. They change your towels every day, but forget to replace them half of the time. Plus, they make you pay upfront for the duration of your stay!!! The buildings are run down, soviet style. On a positive note, it is facing the UN Complex and if you are working for UN for a short period, you might consider China Garden...BUT DON'T. There are guest houses with gardens and much bigger rooms that cost less than China Garden in the vecinity (between 3000-5000 shillings), you just have to look until you find what you want. The problem is there is no list of guest houses in Gigiri, so it all goes by word of mouth...so ask around, even to taxi drivers and security people in the street.

As a UN employee,I' ve stayed at China Garden on numerous occassions and have found the hotel is very much what you pay for. Basic, clean and safe. Hotel location is good only walking distance to to UNEP, US Embassy and Village Market.overall would not hesitate to recommend or stay in this hotel again
